Charming hotels Loire Valley
Discover the Centre region of France by staying in one of our charming Relais du Silence hotels. The Centre region, in the heart of France, has a wealth of exceptional natural heritage sites. The Loire River crosses this vast region from east to west, offering magnificent trips on the water as well as in forestland, such as in the Brenne regional nature reserve. But that's not all! It's also the starting point for discovering France's most beautiful châteaux.
Start your trip in the splendid city of Chartres. This capital of light and perfume is on Paris' doorstep and on the edge of the Loire châteaux region. The city enjoys international renown, thanks in large part to its cathedral, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This spectacular Medieval masterpiece from the 12th and 13th century is sure to surprise you. Chartres Cathedral, shines out from the heart of the city, catching everyone's eye. The impressive structure looks out over many lanes lined with traditional gabled houses and steps which lead to the lower part of the city, beautifully reflected in the River Eure's waters.
The next step of your journey should be Châteaudun, a small but characterful town ranked among the 100 most beautiful detours in France. Stop by its castle, overlooking the Loir, and admire its different architectural styles. Next, head to the historic district to see Medieval, Renaissance and Classical remains. For the more adventurous and curious types, the Grottes du Foulon are a must-see. They reveal the hidden underground world below the town centre.
Orléans, liberated by Joan of Arc in 1429, is a city that borders France's biggest national forest and the Sologne étangs (ponds). You can walk the full length of the Loire's edge, a real natural jewel, and admire its exceptional fauna and flora. Orléans is also a city that provides a perfect blend of art and history. You can see this at the Sainte-Croix d'Orléans Cathedral built in the 4th century, or the crypt of Saint-Aignan built by king Robert the Pious.
Continue your discovery of Centre with a trip to Tours, a town located in the heart of an exceptional heritage area. Take a stroll through the historic district and see the splendid Church of Saint-Julien which dates back to the 6th century and became a listed building in 1840.
To the south of Tours is the Medieval city of Chinon, which stretches out along the Vienne river overlooked by a fortress atop a limestone hill. The Saint-Mexme collegiate church, which features on the UNESCO World Heritage List, was the main religious building until the revolution. Today it is a cultural centre but its Roman architecture is well worth a look. Another site worth seeing is the Chapelle Sainte-Radegonde, a troglodytic chapel with painted murals, including a royal hunt from the end of the 12th century.
